A good naming scheme for your locations means everyone on your team knows right away where a product is stored. Especially as your team grows or you bring on new staff, consistent naming prevents mistakes and speeds up the picking process.
The naming system
A widely used convention is to name locations based on their position in the warehouse, from large to small. The first level is always a letter, the rest are numbers. Depending on the size of your warehouse, you can work with or without zones:
Without zones: Aisle.Rack.Shelf.Bin Example: A.1.3.2 = Aisle A, Rack 1, Shelf 3, Bin 2
With zones: Zone.Aisle.Rack.Shelf.Bin Example: A.1.2.3.4 = Zone A, Aisle 1, Rack 2, Shelf 3, Bin 4
Zones are handy when your warehouse is split into different areas. The zone then becomes the first level in the location name and the aisle becomes a number.
Tips for good location names
|
Tip |
Why |
|---|---|
|
Use a letter for the first level, numbers for the rest |
The letter makes the first level instantly recognizable among the numbers |
|
Keep names short |
Long names are hard to read on a handheld scanner or pick list |
|
Number from left to right, from bottom to top |
Shelf 1 is the bottom one, shelf 4 the top one. Logical and predictable. |
|
Be consistent |
If you use A.1.1.1, don't also use "Aisle A - Rack 1" somewhere else |
|
Plan for growth |
If you have 2 aisles now but might get 5, start with A and B so you can add C, D and E |
Common mistakes
-
Names that are too long: "Warehouse 1 - Left Aisle - Rear Rack - Top Shelf" is unworkable on a scanner. Use "A.1.3.2" instead.
-
Inconsistent naming: if one location is called "A.1.1" and another "Aisle A Rack 1", staff get confused.
-
No hierarchy: if you create all locations at the same level (without a parent location), you lose your overview. Use the hierarchical locations in ShopLinkr.
Renaming existing locations
Already created locations but want to change the naming? You can rename locations in ShopLinkr without it affecting your stock or linked products. Do schedule the renaming outside busy picking hours, so staff don't end up with old names on their pick list while the locations have already been renamed.
